Te Reo Maori courses popular

Two were run through the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce before Christmas and WITTCom executive director Brian Souness is in discussions with major business and Government departments with a view to rolling out more.

“The courses are concentrating on providing a very basic understanding of Te Reo Māori, but are also teaching a better understanding of Māori protocol from a business perspective,” he said.

“It has been a long time coming, but there is a far stronger desire today within the business to be culturally aware.”

Taranaki Chamber chief Arun Chaudhari said his organisation was delighted to team with WITT in delivering two mini-courses on Te Reo Māori basics and Māori culture.

“We were pleased to see attendance from both members and non-members of the Chamber,’’ he said

“Lunchtime courses in the heart of town worked well as the timing and location suited many people.”

He said WITT tutor Bernie Edwards’ encouraging and engaging style made the classes very interesting.

“I am thrilled to see that the Taranaki community continues to show a huge interest in Maoridom – te reo Māori, Māori culture, practices and history. I feel it is very important that the Chamber supports the community in its endeavours and also works closely with iwi.
