Best practice guidelines for investigation and design of pavements will be introduced. This includes flexible and rigid pavement for roads, industrial developments and subdivisions.

Assessment of pavement failures and solutions will be presented in the course. Prediction of pavement deflection and curvature will be discussed in detail with examples using the design and analysis program Circly to meet Auckland Council EPA requirements. 

Mechanistic pavement design will be introduced  using the Circly program. Design will cover various pavement design for new roads, widening and rehabilitation. 

Pavement testing during construction will be introduced in the course to ensure that the pavement has been constructed as per the design and specifications. Inspection and testing plan (ITP) and Holdpoints for each pavement layer will be covered.

Ramiz Iskander

Ramiz Iskander has over 35-year experience in pavement investigation, failure assessment, design and construction monitoring. Ramiz has designed and reviewed over 400 roads across NZ, Fiji and Australia during his career. Ramiz is a BE Civil, CPEng and MISCP. Ramiz is the Director of Pavement Engineering Consultancy Ltd and previously was the national specialist for pavement and surfacing in MWH/ Stantec. He has been a pavement services manager for Beca Consultancy for 8 years.

He was involved in designing new motorways, expressways, road rehabilitation, intersection upgrades and road widening, container yards and subdivisions. Ramiz introduced structural asphalt rehabilitation methods to NZ in 1999 which was used for design of new motorways and arterial road rehabilitation and intersections. Ramiz is a promoter of recycling of existing pavement material to achieve a sustainable, green and cost- effective solutions. He is also an expert in concrete design of pavements and is a member of the international society of concrete pavement. (ISCP).
