Qualification overview

Taranaki Trades Academy is the exclusive vehicle that will take Year 11 to 13 students along the Career Highway towards a vocational qualification while still at school. Students can remain engaged in education, be assisted in transition from a secondary to tertiary learning environment, and gain credits towards NCEA Level 2 and and a tertiary qualification.  

Please Note: Programmes are conditional to sufficient student numbers. 


NEW OFFERING: Engineering Level 3

This NEW programme combines Electrical, Automotive and Engineering components into one Trades Academy programme. Students will gain level 2 and 3 credits and will:

  • Build an engineering project (a light vehicle trailer)

  • Participate in 1 day per week work placement at an Engineering firm which will be coordinated by the ETC and WITT (Term 2 & Term 3)

  • Attend 1 day per week at WITT working towards a mix of Level 2 & 3 credits

This programme is ideal for anyone wanting to pursue a pre-trade qualification or gain a trades apprenticeship. This programme starts Monday 11 February and runs Monday's and Tuesday's. 



Entry requirements

  • Be enrolled in a Taranaki secondary school; and be in Year 11, 12 or 13
  • Working towards or have completed at least 60 credits at NCEA Level 1
  • Have a genuine interest in one of the above career areas
  • Gain approval from school and parents/guardians
  • Attend an interview and create a personal education plan
  • Be motivated to succeed!
