Qualification overview

This programme incorporates the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Operations (Plant and Machinery) Level 3. Which develops students’ knowledge, skills and abilities to the level required by the energy industry for entry level employment as process operators. It covers the skills and knowledge required for plant and machinery operations, thermodynamics, instruments and process and steam operations.

Entry requirements

• 32 credits, including 8 at NCEA Level 1 in English, 12 at NCEA Level 1 in Maths, and 12 at NCEA Level 2 from Science, Computing or Engineering
• Equivalent NZQF Unit Standards; or
• A Level 4 National Certificate or trades qualification in an engineering or technology field
• Applicants will also be required to undertake a drug test, provide written references, a police check and attend an interview.

Career Options

Graduates of this programme may gain employment as entry-level operators in an energy or chemical plant and graduates can pathway to the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Operations (Boiler Operation) (Level 3) and/or the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Field Operations (Level 4) with strands in Process Plant Equipment, Steam Plant, Geothermal Operation, Petrochemical Operation and Petrochemical Transfer and Storage.

• New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety Practice (Level 4).
