Scholarships have a value of up to $7,500 each and are on offer to Taranaki students who are completing their final year of secondary school this year or were Year 13 in 2021.
The scholarships are open to any Taranaki school leaver. The Sports Academy scholarship is designed for young athletes who are ready to start tertiary study while advancing their high-level sports careers.
As well as scholarship for tuition fees, Sports Academy athletes will have access to services such as individual programme planning, testing and prescription in areas such as exercise, physiology, biomechanics and strength and conditioning.
WITT Chief Executive John Snook said these scholarships give back to Taranaki’s rangatahi and will hopefully encourage them to continue contributing to the region as they grow their careers.
He said it also put undergraduate options on the table, with some financial barriers removed.
“You don’t have to leave Taranaki to get a degree.” Snook said.
“Leaving school and starting tertiary study is a big step, and it’s important that our Year 13s are aware of the options available to them so that they can make a considered decision about the best future for them.”
“Currently at WITT we offer three degree programmes in Applied Management, Engineering Technology and Nursing. In 2023 we are working on expanding our degree-level study and introducing four new bachelor's degrees,” he said.
The new degree programmes will be in a broad range of areas from Accounting and Creative Industries through to Culinary Arts and Social Work.
