Puanga / Matariki Celebration

20 - 24 June 2022

This year we will celebrate Matariki for the first time as a national holiday. In Taranaki, Puanga is also celebrated to mark the beginning of the Māori year.
To mark this occasion, we will have activities each day leading up to the holiday at both our Ngāmotu and Hāwera campuses.

These activities are open to all, so make sure to come along and get involved. Check below for a list of activities offered on each day.

New Plymouth Campus

Monday

Kōrero and Kai

Come and listen to a kōrero about why Taranaki Iwi celebrate Puanga and share in some kai. Location: Te Piere (F Block).

Share your Story Competition -Prize-Giving

Come and celebrate with our ākonga who entered the ‘Share your Story' competition as we award prizes. Location: Te Kāuta Cafe Mezzanine

Matariki Ngawhetū

Let’s make harakeke stars to create our own Matariki cluster, and don’t forget Puanga. Location: Te Piere (F Block).

Renewal of WITT Pou

Join us as we celebrate the awakening of the four Pou outside Te Piere They will be unveiled with their new Korowai. Kai will be provided. Location: Te Piere (F Block).

Matariki Whetū Hunt

Join the Matariki whetū hunt – there will be two whetū (stars) hidden in Te Whare Mātauranga each day. Once found take the whetū to the librarians and win a ticket to see the Taranaki Mountain Airs vs Manawatu Jets, Saturday 25 June at 5.30pm. Location: Te Whare Mātauranga

Let’s make harakeke stars to create our own Matariki cluster of stars, and we’ll make sure to include Puanga.

We’ll start Matariki with a shared lunch. Bring something tasty for the table, and let’s have a feast together.

Join our very own waiata jam session. BYO musical instruments and give it a go.

Renewal of WITT Pou

Depart for the Bell Street Campus for the renewal ceremony of the WITT Pou.
Van departs 10.30am, returns to Hāwera campus by 3.00pm.
RSVP by Monday 20 June 2022.
