Ben's heart's in education

WITT’s new Secondary Tertiary Pathways Manager Ben Naughton brings a good balance of skills and experience to the table, for what promises to be a challenging yet rewarding role.

Officially starting in early January, Ben said he is excited to be opening doors and opportunities for students, and for WITT.

“I wanted to work for WITT as my heart is in education. My previous experience in secondary tertiary pathways told me the role is hugely rewarding,” he said.

“I love talking about the future of education and enabling innovation.”

Having taught in secondary schools in Wellington and Taranaki for 15 years, his face is sure to be a familiar one for some of WITT’s students.

“After years of teaching, I moved to a new focus that was still linked to education. I worked for the Ministry of Education in a secondary tertiary pathways role in Whanganui and Palmerston North,” he said. “But this job kept me away from home four days a week which was a struggle.”

Ben went on to work in a Learning Support space with the Ministry, which led him to setting up as a contractor in that area, focussing on social service sector enterprise and initiatives.

“I have had the great pleasure of working closely with the Bishop’s Action Foundation and other community groups such as Flourish Taranaki who are engaged in making a difference for our people here in Taranaki,” he said.

Ben is also the founder of a Charitable Trust called Taranaki Talking, which focusses on raising awareness of communication needs and providing training and support for children, whanau and local business.

“The grand aim is to promote Taranaki as a communication friendly region and enable better standards and opportunities for people who have communication difficulty,” he said.

Outside of work, Ben said he has a few have a few hobbies including the gym, photography and animals.

“At home, we love large dogs and have had two Newfoundlands. We are currently between dogs as there are very few breeders and no puppies available yet. Watch this space though!”
