This is a great way to build an early childhood career and will set you up well for further study towards an early childhood teaching degree. Graduates can progress to OP7031 Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) online where they will continue to be supported by WITT staff.
Learners will take part in online study with the additional benefit of hands-on support from our WITT education tutors. Contact with your tutors and other students will occur at workshops, noho marae, tutorials and during practicums over the course of your study. During your practicum placement, you are required to actively participate for 30 hours a week in the routines of the early childhood centre.
This qualification consists of eight compulsory courses totalling 120 credits. All courses are 15 credits. The programme works in trimesters of 16 weeks. You will spend at least 2 days a week at an early childhood centre working alongside children and qualified early childhood teachers to integrate your learning in relation to everyday teaching experiences. A full-time work load for a trimester is three or four courses. Part-time is a minimum of two courses.
Entry Requirements
• NCEA Level 3 and NCEA literacy and numeracy requirements, or
• Equivalent knowledge, skills, work experience or study.
All applicants are required to:
- Provide two confidential referees
- Undertake a written literacy and numeracy test
- Participate in a group exercise
- Participate in an individual interview
- Undergo Police vetting
Selection into the programme will be subject to a successful interview, and available places.
Changes for 2023 learners
On 1 November 2022, WITT and the programme you have enrolled in became part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology .
When you apply to study with WITT in 2023, you will be enrolled with Te Pūkenga, the new national network of vocational and applied education in Aotearoa New Zealand. You will learn in the same way, in the same place, and with the same people. The great news is that this enables us to share skills and knowledge across a network of passionate education providers, to better help you succeed.
