Te Pūkenga

WITT is part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology. This change means all of the country's Kura Tini, Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics such as WITT, as well as some of the country's Industry Training Organisations, which focus on work-based learning such as apprenticeships, will now sit within one organisation - Te Pūkenga.

What is Te Pukenga

Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, is a new tertiary education provider that brings together Aotearoa’s Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) under one new entity.

Te Pūkenga is focused on vocational learning, that is learning outside of lecture halls and classrooms and in the real world where people can gain the skills and knowledge they need to step into employment or upskill.

Why change?

Te Pūkenga is creating a network of online, on-campus and on-job learning to give learners more flexibility in what, where and how they learn. A driver of the change is to create a fairer education system with whānau at the centre.  Being a part of Te Pūkenga means Taranaki ākonga, kaimahi and whānau will be more connected to the other organisations delivering vocational and applied education in Aotearoa New Zealand. Taranaki kaimahi will work with their colleagues throughout New Zealand to share skills and knowledge to better help ākonga succeed.

What does this mean for students?

Te Pūkenga ākonga studying in Taranaki will continue to be able to access industry-relevant programmes, be taught by local experts, access local internships and work experience and gain the qualifications, experience and networks to pathway to local jobs and beyond.

What does this mean for Taranaki?

Maintaining and building a skilled workforce remains a key focus for Te Pūkenga. Taranaki industries and local businesses will continue to have access to well-trained, work-ready graduates as well as short courses, micro-credentials and part-time courses to upskill and retain their existing workforce.
