You will gain plenty of practical experience in our campus salon Industrie, preparing you for the workforce. This programme is delivered three days per week, including one late night per week in trimester two.
You are also required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of work experience in the hairdressing industry.
You will learn how to:
- perform scissor and razor cutting services.
- select colour and perform a range of colouring and de-colouring services including full head of highlights.
- perform client consultations, including hair and scalp analysis in relation to chemical services.
- perform advanced styling tasks, including blow waving, finger waving, setting and hair-ups.
- recommend home hair care products to meet a range of client needs.

Entry requirements
Students must achieve the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) (Level 3) to gain entry into the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) (Level 4) or equivalent skills and knowledge.
Programme Length
This is a one-year full-time programme of study, or equivalent part-time.
Class Times
Programme is delivered three days per week.
Assessments
This programme includes competency-based assignments, theory tests and practical assessments.
Work Experience
This programme requires a minimum of 100 hours work experience in the hairdressing industry to enhance student’s formal learning.
Future Study Options:
New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing - Professional Stylist (level 4) as part of an Industry apprenticeship.

Hairdresser employed in the salon, retail stores, cruise ships, film, TV and fashion.
I left school at a young age as I didn't really enjoy the school experience. I have known since a very early age that I wanted to become a hairdresser. My family and I did some research and we found out about the Youth Guarantee programme at WITT. In 2021 I enrolled on the Level 3 New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing Salon Support and I made some really good friends there. In 2022, I then enrolled in the Level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist) progamme and now I am currently in my third year at LA Hair doing my apprenticeship and couldn't be any happier with the career I have chosen.

- Provide models for collection of evidence and assessment
- Provide smart shoes suitable for standing long periods
- Provide smart pants or skirt to wear with tunic (uniform)
- Source a salon for work experience requirements
- Student makeup and hair groomed to industry standard for class
- It is required that students will need access to either a WITT PC or a laptop.
