Qualification overview

By contributing to an information technology (IT) related project graduates will show their knowledge of information technology operations and networking. This will be supported by core IT skills relating to database principles, programming, problem solving, technical support and business systems analysis and design all tailored to meet organisational requirements. An understanding of professional, legal, and interpersonal principles will allow them to enhance their effectiveness in an IT role.


Entry requirements

Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in tertiary study, shown by the completion of any of the following qualifications or courses of study:

• NCEA Level 3 including a minimum of 12 credits in mathematics at Level 2 or above. and/or
• Equivalent NZQF Unit Standard or
• Successful completion of one of the following qualifications:
- New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Intermediate User) (Level 3)
- New Zealand Certificate in Computing (Advanced User) (Level 4)
- New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4)
- Certificate in Computing and Information Technology (Level 5)
- New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology (Level 5)


Career Options

Graduates of this diploma will have the skills and knowledge to gain employment in roles such as computer technician, support officer, network administrator, network engineer, applications support analyst, and other entry level technical roles.

The New Zealand Diploma in Information Technology Technical Support (Level 5) provides a pathway for students interested in network or software engineering to progress straight into the second year of the Wintec Bachelor of Applied Information Technology. The study is undertaken at the WITT campus in New Plymouth.  

The qualification also provides a pathway to a specialist Networking or Administration qualification. This may include:

• New Zealand Diploma in Systems Administration (Level 6)
• New Zealand Diploma in Networking (Level 6)
• New Zealand Diploma in Database Administration (Level 6)

Other possible pathways include under-graduate degree qualifications. This qualification may also equip learners to attempt optional industry certifications at the appropriate level and area of specialty.
