Plumbing comes to WITT

The New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gas Fitting and Drainlaying (Level 3) will be offered at WITT from July. It’s a trades programme that’s new to the region and expected to be in hot demand.

Work to retrofit a space on WITT’s Bell Street campus for the new programme is almost complete.

Director of WITT’s School of Trades Training, Primary and Creative Industries, Daniel Fuemana, said the pre-trade qualification is suitable for anyone interested in the industry, regardless of age, gender or background. Enrolling students can also study for free, through a Zero Fees scholarship.

“This programme prepares individuals to move into an apprenticeship at Level 4,” he said. “That’s what industry wants; people who are already prepared with some interpersonal skills, a knowledge of health and safety, plus some other non-regulatory skills, before they get on site.

“When they get to the job they can just hit the ground running, which is what our employers need.”

The New Zealand Certificate in Plumbing, Gas Fitting and Drainlaying (Level 3) is a pre-trade qualification that is being delivered at WITT in collaboration with Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT).

Daniel said his team are expecting to see a diverse mix of students in the 20-week programme.

“We know there are a significant number of people out there considering their options to retrain, to get some formal qualifications, or looking for a change in career,” he said.

“Completing a pre-trade qualification is a good way to get off on the right foot and to build confidence for people who may be entering the trades for the first time.”

And it’s not too late to enrol, with the programme kicking off on 27 July.
