Info Evening draws industry crowd

Around 20 people from local construction companies came along to an industry-focussed evening in WITT’s Carpentry building last week. As well as meeting some of the new faces in WITT’s trades area, industry professionals learned about the key training developments in the construction space.

Representatives from WITT’s School of Trade Training, Primary and Creative Industries caught up with builders to talk about new programmes, new graduates and student trends, as well as sharing some important information on the Government’s recently announced Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF).

On-Job Training Lead Cam Birch said it was a successful event, and a great opportunity to catch up with those in the industry.

“Our intention is to work more closely with industry and build stronger relationships with industry professionals, and that’s a big part of my role,” he said.

“We got to check in with some of the builders and business owners we already know, as well as meeting some new faces which is always good. There is a lot of new development in WITT’s Construction and Trades area at the moment and it was good to be able to share the news, unpack some of the new programmes and talk through any questions.

“A night like this is also a chance for construction professionals from companies across the region to catch up with one another and build their networks – that’s a bonus.”

Cam said people were particularly interested in the Level 6 New Zealand Diploma in Construction and Quantity Surveying programme that’s launching at the end of August, as well as WITT’s move into Managed Apprenticeships.

“What WITT is offering Taranaki’s construction industry in terms of training is bigger and better than before. We’re providing more opportunities to take on well-trained new apprentices, as well as opening doors to upskilling for those already in the trade.”
