WITT welcomes new principal

The guest speaker at May’s WITT graduation ceremony has been named next headmaster of Spotswood College.

Nicola Ngarewa will join the College team on October 15 for the start of the fourth term, succeeding Mark Bowden who is standing down after eight years in the role. She was Head of Department, Maori, at Spotswood College from 1998 to 2005.

Nicola has been principal of Patea Area School since 2015. She was named the 2016 Taranaki Daily News Person of the Year for her innovative approach and lifting the school from one of the lowest ranked schools academically in the country to achieving a 100 per cent pass rate in Level 2 NCEA.

WITT Chief Executive Barbara George said Mark Bowden had been a great friend and supporter of WITT and he could be proud of his achievements at Spotswood.

She was pleased to see the school opting for a successor who had a track record of innovation and WITT was looking forward to working closely with her.

On the school’s website chairperson Linda Whitehead said Nicola was selected from a short-list of three, and the quality of applicants had been excellent.
