WITT and TOPEC taking business outdoors

WITT and TSB TOPEC are excited to announce a joint study option that’ll see students combining their love of the outdoors with a strong foundation in business and leadership.

The result of a partnership between the two education providers, the new full-time joint study option combines WITT’s New Zealand Diploma in Business (Leadership and Management) and TOPEC’s New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Level 4). Students may also pathway into WITT’s Bachelor of Applied Management to build on this career pathway.

The partnership was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday, during a WITT staff development day hosted at TSB TOPEC.

“This is an exciting and unique opportunity for those interested in outdoor education and training, to build a strong business foundation. With a business and leadership qualification, the opportunities really broaden for these graduates into areas like tourism and sports management, operations and facilities management and community leadership and advocacy,” says WITT Deputy Chief Executive Linda Weterman.

“It’s great to be able to work together with a respected name in outdoor education to deliver something that’s both relevant and interesting for Taranaki learners. We’re expecting it will be an attractive option particularly for those who are just starting out in their career journey or have recently left school.”

TSB TOPEC Director Christine 'Grover' Worsfold said she loves the direction the outdoor centre is heading.

"We currently offer secondary school NCEA courses, Year 10 camps, Riversafe, BushSafe and leadership training days for primary schools. With a Level 4 tertiary qualification, we can complete the pathway from our NCEA Level 3 Outdoor Recreation course into the growing outdoor recreation, guiding and adventure tourism industry.

“Two institutions working together for the needs of the Taranaki region is progressive,” she said. “Being able to stay local and get a relevant leadership qualification is legendary!”

Those enrolling in the programme will become a dual student of both WITT and TSB TOPEC, with access to facilities and support in both organisations. 2020 will be the first time this concurrent study option has been offered.
