Sunil loses to win

Since 2014 WITT tutor Sunil Kassote has gained a wife and two children – and lost 35kg.

Last weekend he also added a couple of body building titles to that list.

Sunil won the Mr Taranaki Athletic title at the 2019 NABBA Taranaki Bodybuilding Championships staged at New Plymouth Boys’ High.

Now he is eyeing the national championships in October in Palmerston North.

Sunil, 35, says that six months before before he and wife Rachel were married in November 2014, he looked in a mirror and made a decision to do something about his 105kg frame and his health.

He did it through changing his diet and working out.

“There was no crash diet – I wanted to do something which would be sustainable,” he explained. “And being a chef made it easier, because I love cooking.”

Sunil tutors Level 5 Cookery at WITT and joined the team in January after he and Rachel returned to Taranaki – here her family lives – to enjoy the lifestyle – and not spend three hours a day on a motorway.

Rachel is also at WITT, helping tutor a Level 4 Cookery class. They have two children, a boy, three, and a one-year-old daughter.

Sunil says he has been inspired by his new lifestyle and wants to pass on the knowledge.

“I would like to train people about weight loss and nutrition – I’m a good example of what can be achieved.”

There are costs, though – Sunil has had to invest in a new wardrobe and says even clothes be bought recently are becoming baggy.

Sunil came to New Zealand in 2006 from Mumbai and was WITT’s first international cookery student. He went on to work as a sous chef and then head chef at the Waterfront in New Plymouth. He went to work in a Simon Gaul restaurant, Shed 5, in Wellington, and then at The Foodstore Head chef at Sanford Fisheries, both in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour.
