Science Fair: It's a record

A record number of entries have been received for the annual WITT Taranaki Science and Technology Fair.

The Fair runs over three days next week, from Monday to Wednesday, and the programme is below.

The Fair will be based at the Pukekura Function Centre at Pukekura Raceway. All sections will be in the Members’ Stand, not the public stand as that area is being used by the Taranaki Rugby Union after its home base in Yarrow Stadium was condemned earlier this year.

One of the highlights will be the playing out of a new robotics section – when youngsters will send their robots into battle on Tuesday morning.

Organiser Terry Stowers is confident the new section will be a winner and that the enthusiasm of spectators and players will fuel interest for the 2019 event.

“It’s been a step into the unknown for us and though the entry numbers are modest, I do believe it will be the start of something a lot bigger,” he said.

The 1000-plus record entry number was boosted by an increased interest in many of the pre-judged sections, including posters, photographic and observational drawing sections.

“A feature of that has been the fact that girls are dominating the Year 11-13 section this year,” Terry said.

He was also pleased to see the return of Hāwera Intermediate to the fold after several years away, and the appearance of two new entrants, Hāwera Christian School and Omata School.

It will be the second year that the event, into its 34th year, will have had WITT as its major sponsor.

“We have had great support all round from sponsors and judges,” Terry said.
