Opportunities abound at WITT's first Job Fair

Business, engineering and information technology students welcomed the opportunity to network with industry and employers at WITT’s first Job Fair, held on campus this month.

Eleven organisations including successful local businesses as well as representatives from large multi-national corporations were in attendance to give presentations, network with students and participate in ‘speed meets’.

Five minute speed meet appointments were arranged between businesses and graduating students, designed as an initial introduction between potential employers and employees. Speed meets were also available for Graduate Diploma students seeking host organisations for the industry placements they need to undertake as part of their study.

WITT Industry Placement & Employment Coordinator Jo Syme said she was very proud of how engaged the students were with the visiting business representatives.

“The students really made the most of their opportunity to talk to the business representatives and glean information about the organisations and gain career advice for the future.

“There was a real buzz in the room with lots of chatter and networking happening.  It was a really valuable experience for the students to start forging relationships with people in the industries in which they are interested in working in the future.”

Jo said she was also impressed to see the effort employers went to in their presentations and the authentic interaction with students in the networking sections.

“We are really lucky to have such supportive businesses in the region and the feedback I received from them about our students was all very positive.

“It was a really successful event, particularly considering it was our first year. It gave students and employers a unique opportunity to get to know one another and we’re looking forward to seeing many of our students move into employment and industry placement.”
