Justin's accounting for student success

Justin Conaglen’s taking his skills and expertise as a Chartered Accountant in a new direction, having recently joined the WITT team as an accounting tutor.

Originally from Taranaki, Justin spent over a decade working in Australia before returning to New Plymouth in 2013. His qualifications and experience are already proving to bring a good skill-set to his new role as a tutor.

“I have a Bachelor of Business Studies (major: Accounting) from Massey University in Palmerston North, and I am a Chartered Accountant with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ),” he says.

Justin says he was looking for new challenges, which is what led him to consider a change in career path and apply to work at WITT.

“I liked the idea of sharing knowledge, meeting new people and having a job that was more interactive,” he says.

Justin says he is enjoying the new challenges that come with working in an education environment and gets a kick out of seeing his students discover their potential.

“I enjoy helping the students learn and succeed, as best I can,” he says.

“I also enjoy meeting other staff members and learning about their areas of expertise, and their backgrounds.”

While accounting is traditionally a professional and systematic subject area, Justin says he tries to keep his classes relaxed.

“I try to keep it relaxed but focussed on the learning objectives, so students feel free to interact with each other and myself, and hopefully have a few laughs on what can sometimes be very technical matters.

“What I set out to do is demonstrate how the things being taught are applicable to work, and the world of finance, tax and accounting.”

When Justin’s not at work, he’s spending time with his family.

“At the moment we are busy raising our one-year-old old boy, Zac, which takes up most of our spare time.  We enjoy taking him swimming, to playgrounds, for walks, and family visits. I also try to keep fit, with various forms of exercise, when I can find the time.”
