Hospitality Competitions

As the weekend approaches, nearly 100 competitors will be practicing and preparing with the support of teachers, tutors, whanau and their bosses for Monday’s NZ Chefs Taranaki Hospitality Competitions.

WITT Faculty Leader Angela Ferguson, who is the Salon Director and NZ Chefs National Vice President, describes the event as a showcase of up and coming industry professionals

Judges and competitors from out of the region, Taranaki secondary schools, WITT and industry members will be involved in the competition hosted by WITT.

The event comprises of live cooking events, mocktail, table setting, barista competitions and prepared baked goods going on show.  The largest class this year is the Decorated Cupcakes, which has attracted 21 competitors, including some from Whanganui.

The event kicks off at 7.45am at the Bell St Campus, Hospitality Department in E Block.  The public are welcome to come and view what is happening.  Come and be a judge of the “WITT Chicken Curry Cup” where six teams of two are battling it out for the “people’s choice”.

That event starts at 10am with the tasting of dishes at around 11am.  There are a number of regional NZ Chefs Competitions  around the country leading up to the New Zealand Hospitality Championships to be  held in August in Auckland.

Angela Ferguson said that the people that make this happen are all volunteers.

“Without the support of WITT and use of their fantastic facilities we wouldn’t be able to host such a wonderful event.  To have 12 competitors coming from UCOL Whanganui and 12 from Whanganui High School is testament to the event, which is in its seventh year being hosted at WITT.
