Hatch, bach and dispatch

In a few months, it will be placed onto a large transporter and moved to a new site in Taranaki.

It could go straight to a new “home – and become a home – or it might wait for an owner and be based at Central House Movers in New Plymouth’s Katere Rd.

Either way, with a price tag $185,000 the latest build a bach project between Taranaki Futures and WITT will provide someone with a modern three-bedroom home at a bargain price.

A second home is also under construction on the same site at WITT by students on a New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) Carpentry programme.

The Build a Bach project has run every year since 2014 and the house on the WITT site is the sixth produced.

The project involves more than 40 Taranaki organisations who contribute time and material and since 2014 more than 80 students have progressed into a trade pathway.

Taranaki Futures general manager Warwick Foy is delighted with the success of this year’s project, which for him ticks all the boxes of businesses getting together to encourage young men and women to get into the building industry.

That extends to the marketing and selling of the buildings.

“Taranaki Futures will also assist with the sale of the second home being built on the WITT site and we have McDonalds Real Estate handling the sale again,” he said.

Taranaki Futures board member Blake Habib, from the Professionals, is also providing a hand – and there is no better advertisement for the project than Dean Jones, who is responsible for sales at Central House Movers.

His son Tristen was one of the 80 students to progress into a trade pathway through Build a Bach and Dean can’t speak highly enough of it.

Mike O’Byrne, Matt Nairn and Aaron Booker, who own the New Plymouth branch of Central House Movers are of the same mind – and they bought the sixth Build a Bach, a two-bedroom unit, and have it on their site as an effective showroom for the project.

These days, though, the houses come with three bedrooms.

WITT News will keep you updated on the projects.
