Golden girl

One of the highlights of the Taranaki Hospitality Competitions at WITT this week was away from the kitchens.

Jessie Hovell, studying towards an NZ Certificate in Food and Beverage, Level 4, entered in the Innovative Table Setting event and was the only competitor on the day to receive a Gold medal with Distinction.

That meant the talented food and beverage student finished with a score of 100 out of 100.

The head judge of the class, Renate Staudinger from Stony River Hotel in Okato, said she was faultless.

The judge said she never seen anyone work so meticulously, with the right mix of personality too, and that she would give her a job any day.

The effort also impressed WITT faculty leader Angela Ferguson, the Salon Director.

“I have never seen a gold with distinction in the eight years I have been Salon Director of the Taranaki Hospitality Competitions,” she said.

The annual event, which attracted radio, print and online media coverage this year was enjoying its 12th year – and sixth at WITT.

Earlier this year three students from Hāwera High School earned places at Womad in the Taste the World marquee with chef Jax Hamilton. This week two of the three, Nina Devlin and Kate Mackay, joined school colleague Tarryn Ogle among the south Taranaki successes at the competitions.  Tarryn won gold for her pasta dish, Nina a silver and Kate a bronze for their work.
