Bright future for Chef Joy

Local chef and WITT Cookery graduate Jackson Joy says the support of his tutors helped him to achieve his goals right throughout his course of study. He topped the class with a Distinction mark in his last City & Guilds assessment, the only student in his class to achieve at that level in the international qualification’s final exam.

Jackson’s now employed as a sous chef at Pekaren in Bell Block, having worked part-time at the Italian café while he was a student. He said studying in New Plymouth gave him plenty of opportunity to pick up work in the local industry.

“One of the reasons I love to work here at Pekaren is because of the supportive owners Lisa and Belinda,” he said. “My head chef Jassy also gives me the opportunity to create my own dishes like pasta and pizza and cabinet food. Plus, Pekaren is known as the best pizzeria in New Plymouth!”

Jackson said the quality of teaching was one of the highlights of studying at WITT.

“While I was studying in WITT my biggest inspiration was my tutor, chef Goonjan. She is really passionate about cooking,” he said.

“As a student I always observed how she cooked food, how she presented it, and the comments she gave. It really helped me to improve a lot in my own cooking.”

Jackson said he was motivated to enrol after getting recommendations from friends who had already studied at WITT.

“They told me that the skilled tutors and friendly study environment would help to achieve my dream to become a professional chef in the industry.”

He’s now well on the way to achieving that dream, with the New Zealand Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) Level 5 under his belt and some great experience in the kitchen.

Jackson’s tutor, Goonjan Gupta, said he had all the right ingredients to be successful in his professional career.

“He came well prepared to class, showed interest in learning and researching and got along well with everyone,” she said. “He has a bright future ahead of him in the industry.”
