Applications open for $7,500 school leaver scholarships

Applications are now open for school leaver scholarships, which cover a year's tuition fees on any undergraduate degree at WITT.

Scholarships are on offer to Taranaki students who completed Year 13 in 2019 or will finish school this year, and plan to start a degree at WITT in Trimester 1, 2021. The scholarships have a value of up to $7,500 each.

WITT Chief Executive John Snook said the school leaver scholarships are a way of giving back to the region's young people, putting undergraduate options on the table without the financial burden.

"School leavers don't have to leave Taranaki to get a degree," he said. "And this is an opportunity to lessen the financial barriers that traditionally come with three years of undergraduate study."

"Whether our rangatahi aspire to be accountants, nurses, business analysts or engineers, there are a lot of opportunities here. For many of our young people in Taranaki, getting a degree without having to leave their home is a great option."

WITT offers undergraduate degrees in business and management, engineering and nursing, and there are diplomas on offer ranging from construction management to IT. Postgraduate options and Masters-level study are also in the pipeline for 2021.

Those learners eligible for the Government's Fees-Free scheme, which covers the first year of tertiary study, are able to put the WITT scholarship towards their second-year fees.

"We will have graduates who are essentially only having to pay for one year of a three-year degree. That's a great deal and a real head start when it comes to paying off their study," John said.

John said young people getting their tertiary education in Taranaki has a number of benefits.

"Our programmes are strongly linked to local industry and have a significant real-world experience component. Learners get local experience, make local connections, and graduate ready to jump straight into the workforce.

"Studying in Taranaki gives our graduates that local edge when it comes time to get a job."

Applications for school leaver scholarships open tomorrow (31 August) and close at 9am, 21 September 2020. Find out more at witt.ac.nz/Study-at-WITT/Scholarships/
