PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
 
The National Diploma in Journalism is the ideal base qualification for a professional journalist working in print, broadcast or digital media. The programme aims to produce graduates with extensive practical skills to be “job ready” for a junior position in a daily or community newspaper newsroom, a radio station newsroom or a television channel newsroom. A typical graduate would be able to investigate, report on and comment on events, issues and people, take photographs for publication, design and layout pages, write feature stories and understand internet news sites. 
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
 
  • A minimum of four years of secondary education; and
  • 48 or more credits at NCEA Level 2, with no fewer than 12 credits in each of four subjects; including English; and/or 
  •  Equivalent NQF Unit Standards,

CAREER OPTIONS
 
This programme prepares students for careers in journalism for newspaper, magazine, online, television and radio. Graduates have also found careers as freelance writers, and in public relations and corporate communications.
