Lynn Murray

International Student liaison

Meeting people from different parts of the globe is a way of life for WITT’s International Student Liaison.

In 1990 Lynn Murray and her husband Bruce hosted their first International guests through “The Friendship Force”.

Since then Lynn and Bruce have opened their home to students from AFS (American Field Service), YFU (Youth For Understanding) and ASSE (American Scandinavian Student Exchange ) as well as WITT and local schools.

Students have come from countries such as Estonia, Latvia, Columbia, Germany, Japan, Korea and China. “Many of these students have returned many times and we are now going to their weddings.”

When the International Student Liaison position was advertised in 2001 Lynn was certain she could bring the skills she had learnt over the years as a home stay parent.

“It is a job I love. I enjoy meeting the students off the plane and seeing the joy on their faces after such a long journey.”

“I enjoy seeing them grow as they become more confident in speaking English and taking care of their own lives, as for many of them, this is the first time they have had to make decisions for themselves.”

“I enjoy being there for them when they are sad and homesick and really just need a hug and a mother.”

“I enjoy being part of a team of very experienced people who care about our students and, I think, we look after all their needs very well and have their best interests at heart.”

Having traveled overseas more than 30 times, Lynn realises how brave these young people are coming to a new culture, very often using another language and trying to study all at the same time.

Over the years, the countries the students come from have changed but in most cases, the student’s needs haven’t.

“If I have been able to make a difference in some student’s lives then I think I have earned my title as ‘Mother Lynn’.”
