Qualification overview

This qualification is designed for people who wish to enter mental health support work, or who already work as paid or unpaid Mental Health Support Workers.  The qualification is a combination of classroom learning, online learning and work placements.

Students who graduate will have basic knowledge and understanding of the skills necessary to carry out a supportive relationship with people who have been or are experiencing mental illness and work alongside clients to support them in their recovery. Most students are likely to be eligible for a $2000 fees grant from Career Force (ITO).

Entry requirements

 
  • 48 or more credits at NCEA Level 2, with no fewer than 12 credits in each of four subjects; which must include 4 credits at Level 2 or higher in Reading and 4 credits at Level 2 or higher in Writing and/or equivalent NZQF Unit Standards
  • Applicants will also be required to undertake an interview, provide written references and complete a Police check. 
  • People already employed in a mental health setting will be eligible to apply and can complete the qualification while remaining in their place of work. People who are not employed in a mental health setting can also apply but they will be required to gain experiential learning with a relevant agency with appropriate access to supervision.
  • Students must have computer access and be able to use a word processing programme.

 

Career Options

Possible career opportunities exist within mental health and addiction services, Iwi health providers, residential services, home-based support providers, community/NGO (non-Governement organisation) sector and District Health Boards.
