Qualification overview

There is a shortage or Social Workers throughout New Zealand and this Degree is how you can get into this rewarding industry. The Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Social Work) is designed for you if you wish to pursue a professional career in social work. The qualification provides in-depth knowledge and skills relating to social work practices in contemporary Aotearoa. It has a collaborative focus, encouraging people to work in teams and recognise strengths in others. 

A career in social work means you'll enjoy in interaction with all types of people; from personal client to other professionals.  Your services will be sought after to assist people in your community, provide advice, advocacy and support for challenged individuals or groups to help them realise their social, emotional and psychological ability.  This three year qualification will give you the knowledge, skills and attributes required for social work practice in a variety of settings, such as schools, hospitals, community groups or Government services.

This qualificaiton is delivered in partnership with the Waikato Institute of Technology.

 

Entry requirements

 

  • 60 credits and NCEA Level 2 in 4 subjects, including English, or
  • 42 credits at NCEA Level 3 in 3 subjects, or
  • University Entrance or equivalent qualification.

As an alternative, candidates for the Social Work endorsement may be granted entry if they have gained one of the following:

  • Certificate in Social Sciences (Level 4)
  • WITT National Certificate in Mental Health (Mental Health Support Work) (Level 4)
  • National Certificate in Social Services (Level 4)
  • WITT's Certificate in Foundation Studies or Certificate of University Preparation
  • Or equivalent Level 4 qualification

Candidates are required to indicate whether they have been convicted of or are being prosecuted for a criminal offence as some types of criminal conviction may limit the ability to secure practicum placement and therefore to complete the programme

Selection of candidates will also be based on the following considerations:

  • A submitted application
  • A submitted record of qualifications, employment history, work experience and two references on forms provided
  • A personal biography
  • An interview.

Special admission may be granted to candidates aged 20 years or over who do not meet the specified entry requirements. These candidates may be required to demonstrate an ability to successfully complete the programme through a process of an interview and/or assessment.

 

Career Options

The Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Social Work) may lead to employment in the health field, child protection (including Child Youth and Family), Government agencies, Community, Probation Service and family support agencies.

Further study options

Post-graduate study in Social Work at a New Zealand University.
