Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Highways)

Chris Hopkins has strengthened his roading career with a Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Highways).

The 32-year-old is a laboratory technician with Opus International Consultants in Napier and says his job involves geotechnical investigations, related to roading. “Basically we test anything to do with the ground. We have a lot of focus on testing materials for the construction of roads.”

He travelled from Napier to Hamilton to do the block courses for the Level 7 qualification, which he completed part time over two years. 

Studying through the WITT-owned New Zealand Institute of Highway Technology suited Chris, but it wasn’t always easy.

“It was a challenge to complete assignments and study in the evenings and weekends while I was working full time, and to keep a balance with my life at home, but I think it was worth it.”

Just weeks before sitting exams, he also became a father for the first time.    

As a school leaver, Chris gained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Massey University. He then went on to work in laboratories in the UK and Wellington, before moving to Opus in Napier.

 “There was a lot I didn't know about the industry, but Opus supported me to study and gain industry knowledge and skills while I worked in the laboratory,” he says.

“I recommend this qualification to anyone wanting to gain highways industry knowledge.”
