Qualification overview

This programme focuses on critical skills and knowledge for entry into the road transport industry and is endorsed by the New Zealand Road Transport Association as a cadetship. Cadets will learn skills and knowledge required to safely operate heavy vehicles that require Class 2 (medium rigid vehicle) or Class 4 (heavy rigid vehicle) licences. The programme is split into two key components:

For the first 8 weeks cadets spend 1 day at WITT, 1 day self-directed study and 3 days on work placement.

The last 4 weeks of the programme consists of full-time work placement and assessment within companies.

Information Evening Anyone interested in applying for the course is invited to attend an Information Evening at 6pm on Thursday 3 May 2012 at the WITT Bell Street Campus in the cafeteria, ground floor B Block.

The Information Evening will provide further information regarding the programme, the application and selection process, and will include industry representatives who will provide information about employment and career prospects within the commercial road transport industry.

This qualificaiton is delivered in partnership with NZ Road Transport Association.

                       

Entry requirements

  • 3 years secondary education and 8 or more credits at NCEA Level 1 in each of English and Mathematics or
  • Equivalent NQF unit standards or.
  • Equivalent knowledge and skills, work experience and/or previous study and
  • A current class 1 drivers licence held for at least 6 months prior to starting the programme
  • Applicants will also be required to undertake 'fitness to drive' medical and drug tests, an assessment of attitude to safety and to provide evidence of a police check.

Career Options

Experienced heavy truck drivers may progress to transport coordination and management roles, transport and logistics planning, specialised driving and self employment.

Futher industry and management qualifications eg. WITT's National Certificate in Business (First Line Management).
