Qualification overview

 

 

This programme will develop students' knowledge and skills for entry level employment as Process Operators in the oil and gas and chemical industries.  It covers introduction to process operations, saftey and risk management, basic Chemistry and Thermodynamics, petrochemical processes, petroleum projects, gas testing and the other operational and generic skill sets. 

It has been designed with input from the Petroleum Skills Association of NZ. It is "industry based", with a significant amount of sponsored work placement where students gain a broad exposure to the local industry.

Entry requirements

  • 4 years secondary education and a minimum of 32 credits, including 8 in English at NCEA Level 1, 12 in Mathematical at NCA Level 2 and 12 from Science, Computing, Engineering at NCEA Level 2, or 
  • Equivalent NQF unit standards, or
  • A level 4 National Certificate or Trades Qualification in an engineering or technology field
  • Applicants will also be required to undertake a drug test, provide written references, Police check and attend an interview.

This qualification has been designed with significant input from companies who employ Process Operators locally. Opportunities for career progression and employement in and beyond Taranaki exist for this specialised and in-demand occupational group. 

Further study options

Companies employing Process Operators place an importance on training and further qualification.  Graduates will normally progress to the Level 4 National Certificate once employed.
