Every day is different for electrician’s apprentice Caleb Marshall.
The 21-year-old completed a Certificate in Electrical Skills at WITT in 2010 and then landed an apprenticeship with Andy Smaill Electrical Services. “I really enjoy doing it,” says Caleb. “Every day is different. We do all sorts of different jobs and I get quite excited.”
Caleb says he had been working at the meatworks at Waitara, before deciding it was time to get a trade. He weighed up his options between working with loos or lights and chose the latter.
Next stop was WITT, which he reckons was a good move. “It prepared me well, I believe. It gave me the basic knowledge to get into the industry, get some good experience and get started,” he says.
“It’s a good environment. I just like the people; everyone is friendly and the tutors are awesome. They know what they are talking about.”
The course involves studying at WITT from Monday to Wednesday and doing work placements on Thursday and Friday. Caleb did his work experience with Andy Smaill in New Plymouth and that led to his full-time job.
Caleb says anybody thinking about becoming electrician should consider studying at WITT. “I really do recommend it, especially for someone who’s got no experience.”
