Qualification overview

The aim of this qualificaiton is to produce graduates who can reflect on the principles and practices of tertiary learning and teaching and who can integrate this learning into the delivery, design, development, assessment and evaluation of their teaching in a New Zealand/Aotearoa cultural context.

Entry requirements

Applicants should demonstrate an ability to succeed in tertiary study, shown by the completion of any of the following qualifications of courses of study:

  • 12 credits in NCEA English Level 1 and 36 credits in NCEA Level 2.
  • Evidence of equivalent literacy and ability to study at Level 5 through previous study, work or life experience.

Applicants who do not meet the academic entry critieria above may be admitted to the qualification if they are able to demonstrate:

  • Equivalent knowledge and skills; and/or
  • Previous and relevant life skills or work experience; and/or
  • Other formal or informal study

Many of the courses contained in this qualification require students to have adult teaching experience, and for some courses students need to be currently training adults in order to complete assessment requirements. Studens must have access to adult learners within a tertiary teaching and learning environment.

SUBSUMED QUALIFICATIONS

Students who complete 60 credits at Level 5 will gain the Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching (Level 5).

 

Career Options

Graduates with this qualification will have developed and extended their skills as a tertiary educator which will support them within an adult teaching and learning context.

Further study options

Graduates of the diploma qualification can continue to gain a higher qualification in Adult Teaching and Learning such as a degree in Education endorsed in Adult Teaching and Learning.
