Certificate in Hairdressing Skills

Heather Newlove is sharing her love of hairdressing with all her clients at Blush Hair Design in New Plymouth.

“I think you should be a hairdresser because it’s a great way to express your creativity and you get to meet so many different people,” Heather says. “There are so many places you can go with hairdressing; you don’t have to stay in a salon, and you can travel. Plus, it’s an exciting job. You come to work and don’t know what’s going to happen.” Good hairdressers are also in demand. “Everyone needs a haircut.”

She studied full-time in 2009 and 2010, landing a part-time job at Blush last year. The salon is owned by Kim Cleaver and Kylie Moore, who have both taught at WITT.

It appears that the 21-year-old enjoys every aspect of her job, but is particularly fond of the three Cs – cutting, colouring and chatting.“You spend your whole day making conversation with people.”

Heather’s pathway into hairdressing wasn’t straight forward. After leaving St Mary’s Diocesan School in Stratford, she took a year off to decide what to do. She looked at university, other careers and finally chose hairdressing. “It had been in the back of my mind so I decided to give it a go,” she says. “It was so the right thing.”

 At WITT, Heather has found the tutors inspiring and helpful. “They are so good and they give you so much of their time.”
