The visual art, design, photography and film (multi-media) industries generally attract highly creative people valued for their ability to resolve problems and devise innovative solutions.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of partnerships created between arts organisations, district councils, businesses and other community groups. These partnerships expand opportunities for artists and designers to help develop careers and employment.

Creative New Zealand is responsible for the development of the arts in New Zealand. Its main focus is to encourage, support and promote the value of the arts and New Zealand artists, nationally and internationally.

Taranaki has a thriving art and design community with a great collection of commercial design and web firms.

CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES

The creative technologies field offers fundamental and specialist skills for those interested in working in the creative sector. The Certificate in Creative Technologies develops practical skills unique to the visual arts and digital media fields. Further your study options with our two year Diploma in Creative Technologies, which allows our students to complete their final degree year at Weltec in Wellington.

CULTURAL DESIGN

Cultural Design elective courses are offered in the Diploma programme in year 1 and year 2. These courses enable students to engage with Toi Māori (Māori Arts) learning and developing traditional and contemporary technologies, ideas and creative outcomes.

WEB, ANIMATION & VIDEO  

Students interested in digital media can develop fundamental and specialist skills in web media, 2D and 3D animation and video available in the Diploma level programme. Digital media courses are available within all qualifications of the arts portfolio.

 

GRAPHIC DESIGN 

Do you dream of becoming a graphic designer or illustrator? Gain skills and practical experience in graphics, digital illustration, photography and print media, when you complete the Certificate in Creative Graphics (Level 3). You can also take your studies further with the Level 4 Certificate in Creative Technologies and the Level 6 Diploma in Creative Technologies.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The photography field offers a variety of challenging career opportunities for those interested in the creative sector or those who just want to take better quality photographs. Photography is available as individual papers.

VISUAL ARTS

Visual arts traditionally focus on drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. With the development of digital technologies, visual arts now offer a versatile and challenging direction for those interested in working in the creative sector. Visual Arts is available within the Creative Technologies Certificate and Diploma qualifications.
