SPEAKER FORUM: on the contemporary image - how do we know what we are looking at?
A discussion of the problem of undecidability in contemporary visual art practice. How do we know what we are looking at, even when we are looking at a photograph? One image or object may refer to two or more things simultaneously, sometimes creating a paradox. In the face of that paradox we are left unable to decide upon or resolve that image, and this may cause a failure of language. In that failure we may encounter an experience of what is described by Jacques Lacan as 'The Real'.

SPEAKER FORUM: study skills (academic literacy) involves more than throwing STUDENTS in the deep end and letting them sink or swim
‘Success!’, ‘Retention!’, ‘Reduce attrition!’ - the current ‘call words’ of the NZ tertiary climate.
‘I want more from life! I want to be ...’ the call words of the student with little realisation of how much their lives will change as they transition to a life of study.
How many students have left our courses this year? Could this have been prevented? What role could you have played?
Barbara’s masters project investigated the effectiveness of differing methods of a Learning Centre’s provisions/ interventions in aiding the transitioning of students into the tertiary environment. Three views were sought. The study revealed a model for partnership in practice, supporting the importance of ‘prevention is better that cure’ which may reduce the numbers of students who ‘just sink rather than swim'.
Speaker: Barbara Morris, Learning Skills Tutor
