Andrea Corbett

Andrea began her nursing career in 1974. Originally qualifying as an Enrolled Nurse she moved on to graduate as Registered General and Obstetric Nurse. Upon returning from Post Graduate studies in England and the United States she completed the Advanced Diploma of Nursing in 1991. She has gained higher qualifications in nursing culminating in the awarding of her PhD in 2008 from Monash University, Melbourne.

Andrea’s extensive clinical experiences began in orthopaedics and neonatal nursing. Latterly they have been focused on rehabilitation, care of the elderly and disability issues. She is a founding and continuing trustee of the Taranaki Community Health Trust.

Andrea’s formal research experience began with her undertaking a major 100 point thesis study into the whanau experience of stroke which saw the awarding of her Masters degree from Massey University. She has held the position of Chairperson of PACE (the Positive Aging Centre of Excellence) since its formation in 2003. PACE, under Andrea’s direction, conducted a major study into the housing and safety needs of the over-65s in the New Plymouth District and in early 2009 undertook a major study into the use of complementary and alternative medicines in conjunction with prescription medicines.

Andrea’s PhD was a four-year research study that explored the issues surrounding the interface between tertiary and primary health care delivery that perpetuated inequity and inequality in health services delivery.

Andrea joined the staff of the School of Nursing of WITT in 2001. As well as teaching responsibilities she fills the position of Lead Clinical Tutor in an acute medical, AT&R ward at Taranaki Base Hospital and also holds the position of Research Co-ordinator for the School of Nursing, and is a member of the Research Committee and Academic Board at WITT.
