Young chefs on show at WITT

Breah Jones from Manukorihi Intermediate, Waitara, and Benjamin Chow from St Pius X, New Plymouth, will represent Taranaki at the national final of the Kiwi Kids Can Cook competition.

WITT hosted seven budding junior master chefs aged from to 11 last Saturday when they competed for the inaugural title of Taranaki Kiwi Kids Can Cook winner, and represent their school at the National Final in Auckland as part of the Hospitality Championships at the end of July.

The event was started in Northland 10 years ago by Chef/Lecturer Hughie Blues and now regional events are held throughout the country.  NZ Chefs Taranaki Branch President and WITT Trades Faculty Leader Angela Ferguson was very pleased with how the day went.  With the support of Hughie Blues and Auckland Chef Grant Kitchens cooking kicked off early in the morning with three heats being held and the winner of each heat going onto a final cook off.

Breah, 11, was the Gold medal winner on the day and silver medallist Benjamin, 8, earned himself a wildcard spot at the July 30 final. Ruby Stenning, from St. John Bosco, New Plymouth, was awarded the bronze medal.

“Watching these kids cook was amazing; the talent they showed at such young ages was wonderful.  All of them are planning on entering next year.  We are hoping this will grow each year,’’ Angela Ferguson said.

She will help Breah and Benjamin practice at WITT during the school holidays leading up to the National Final.
