Science Fair entries pile in

The entries are in and it looks as though young Taranaki scientists will be giving judges almost 1000 entries to ponder in the annual WITT Taranaki Science and Technology Fair.

The big night for Terry Stowers and his team at the Pukekura Function Centre will be August 9 when the award winners are named, including the recipient of a new WITT scholarship.

It is the 33rd Taranaki science fair and this year has a new major sponsor, WITT.

The Fair is open to the public on August 8 from 6- 9pm and on August 9 from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

As it has been at this time of year for the last eight years, Terry Stowers New Plymouth home has been the filing centre for hundreds of entries, and after entries closed last Wednesday work started on entering the names, sorting and judging the students’ work.

But for some students the work has just begun as they prepare their projects – including water rockets.

“We are looking forward to another successful competition – and seeing again just how innovative our young people can be,’’ Terry Stowers said.

The sections take in Scientific Investigation, Technological Development, Scientific Journalism, Observational Drawing, photographs, advertising and building water rockets. Students compete in three levels, Years 7 and 8, Years 9 and 10 and Years 11, 12 and 13.

This year’s journalism topic poses the question:  “Should New Zealand become more involved in the Space Industry?’’

Students are challenged each year make a rocket using fizzy drink bottles which will be fired from a launcher at the same pressure and trajectory. The students will decide on design, and how much water they will add to the rocket before launching.

WITT and the Fair organisers have announced a three year naming rights agreement for the event which will include the presentation of a WITT scholarship, fees free study for a year, worth up to $6500.

Marketing Manager Natalie Warren said the event was a natural fit for WITT, which worked closely with Taranaki schools throughout the year.
