Sample a Taste of Art

WITT Arts tutor Donna Willard-Moore is running six three-hour introductory workshops during the school holidays.

They start with an introduction to drawing on Monday July 6, followed by How to Draw Faces on July 7 and Drawing for Tattoos on July 8. The second week starts with Introduction to Painting on Weds July 15, followed by Watercolour Painting on July 16 and Watercolour and Mixed Media on July 17.

“It’s something new, to an extent, because it’s something we did five years ago,’’ says Donna, “ but I was keen to get it back , especially with ACE closing down.

“The workshops are tasters and are only three hours long but it allows people to see what the basis of a particular field is.”

Donna says trying to draw a face for beginners can be a challenge, and there are certain principles which should be followed.

“It’s a bit like learning how to draw for tattoos. The human body is made up of curved surfaces, so that’s what we do. I make them draw on a curved surface of synthetic skin so they can see the difference. It’s not paper.

“The workshops are a lot of fun, very enjoyable and  for any secondary school students who are getting bored  during the school holidays, this is a great way to spend a morning.’’

Donna says a minimum of 10 is required for each class to go ahead, which can cater for a maximum of 18.

“The minimum age allowed is 14, although anyone younger can attend as long as they have a parent or carer with them.

“But this is for people of all ages. Some  want to do something about having a go at drawing or painting, but haven’t got around to it, so this is a chance for them to find out more.

“It’s also  ideal for someone wanting to see what’s it’s all about with a view to  coming to WITT and studying art.’’

All classes run from 9am-noon, and cost $40 each, or $30 to Witt students. All members of the public are welcome to attend these workshops. For more information ring Witt (06)757 3100.
